Antibiotics are a type of antimicrobials used in treatment and prevention of bacterial infections. They may inhibit or kill the growth of bacteria. Many antibiotics are also effective against protozoans and fungi; some are toxic to animals and humans also, even when given in therapeutic dosage. Antibiotics are not effective against viruses such as influenza or a common cold and may be harmful when taken inappropriately. Physicians must ensure the patient has a bacterial infection before prescribing antibiotics.
The global systemic antibiotics market was valued at $39.6 billion in 2013 and is expected to reach $41.2 billion by 2018, at a CAGR of 0.8%. The global market for antifungal therapeutics was valued at $10.7 billion in 2013 and is projected to reach $12.2 billion in 2018, a five-year compound annual growth rate (CAGR) of 2.7%.
