Nephrology Department

The Nephrology department of the “G.Papanikolaou” General Hospital in Thessaloniki consists of the nephrology clinic, the dialysis unit and the plasmapheresis unit. The nephrology clinic has a capacity of 12 beds, and is in possession of two ultrasound machines one for solid organs of the abdomen and the other for the control of large vessels, the placement of catheters, and the performance of kidney biopsies. The Hemodialysis Unit has 19 dialysis machines, serving about 70 chronic patients (chronic kidney disease patients in terminal stage undergoing regular dialysis per` day and variants). They also serve about 40 emergency patients per month (total number of executed dialysis sessions about 1100 per month). In the plasmapheresis unit we perform an average of 10 to 15 sessions of plasmapheresis per month, especially in patients with hematological, neurological and pulmonary problems. Our experience is published in medical journals. Our department has reported the largest number of plasmapheresis in Greece - about 2000 sessions of plasmapheresis.

As nephrologists we place Permanent hemodialysis catheters with a special technique. Being the only Department of Nephrology in Thessaloniki with this specialization, we cover the needs of other Prefectural Hospitals.

Our department also runs an outpatient clinic for chronic kidney disease and hypertension four times a week, registering about 1300 visits every year. The nephrology department is attached to the two Internal Medicine Departments of the hospital and is run by a number of nephrologists (consultants and residents) and specialized nurses. The clinic also participates in the on-call program for emergency conditions of the city together with the Internal Medicine Departments and accommodates a large number of hospitalizations every year.
