Catherine Keske

Title: Food security and food sovereignty within and beyond California's Central Valley


Dr. Catherine Keske is a professor of management in the School of Engineering at the University of California-Merced.  She is an agricultural and resource economist who conducts interdisciplinary research on sustainable agro-environmental systems.  She has published more than 140 peer-reviewed papers on topics such as the economic feasibility of farmers growing their own fuel; the contributions of economic dependency and the threat of development to a sense of place; and, the economic feasibility of using biochar to increase agricultural yields in food-insecure communities.  


She will share research and perspectives on the impacts of food production in California's Central Valley on food security and food sovereignty within the region and elsewhere in the world.  Her presentation will offer suggestions about how communities may advance their own food sovereignty while addressing food security.
