The role of a Pediatric nurse is to work with children and their families from the child’s birth until he or she reaches young adulthood. One of a pediatric nurse’s primary duties is to perform screenings to ensure that the young patient is developing at a normal rate. At each well-child exam, the pediatric nurse observes and assesses the child’s health and development according to specific developmental milestones, including sleeping through the night, sitting and walking unassisted, and learning to speak. The pediatric nurse also treats common childhood illnesses such as ear infections and administers scheduled immunizations.
